Habitat for Humanity builds communities by constructing decent, affordable housing in partnership with low-income families and the community. These new homeowners thus begin to break out of the cycle of poverty.
Since 1994, VPC has been in partnership with Peninsula Habitat for Humanity (as of 2008, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco), building ownership housing throughout San Mateo County, supplying construction volunteers, youth art projects, and funds.
Groups from VPC participated in the building of many local Habitat sites (Gloria Way in East Palo Alto, 3 single family homes in Menlo Park, two developments on Lincoln Av in Redwood City, Rolison Rd in Redwood City, townhomes in Daly City).
In 2000, VPC entered into a large fundraising partnership that raised over $1M in pledges to Peninsula Habitat over a 3-year period.
In 2008, this partnership was renewed in conjunction with our 50th anniversary. A silent auction at our Gala celebration and fundraising associated with our Race Across America (RAAM) team resulted in over $50,000 in donations.
In 2009, Habitat plans to team with the City of Menlo Park to refurbish foreclosed homes and sell them to lower income residents, thereby eliminating blight. Read the Almanac article here.
In 2011, Mary and Matt Elting took over the leadership of this Mission partner and VPC is again sending build teams to sites. Most construction is taking place in Daly City, but various renovation projects are also being done in south San Mateo County.
