Our latest project, in partnership with our sister church,
Monte de Sion, in Tekax, Yucutan, Mexico
VPC Mission Committee’s goal is to focus on “upstream” projects that address root causes of poverty and health issues, while providing hands-on opportunities to VPC families; thus our newest mission project … Living Waters for the World (LWW), a visionary Presbyterian-led program which brings safe drinking water to communities around the world.
We in the United States take access to safe drinking water for granted, but around the world, the need for clean water is overwhelming! According to United Nations estimates, more than 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water today and by 2025, an astounding two thirds of the world’s population will not have access to clean water. Sadly, each year approximately three million people die from water-related illnesses, most of them children. Access to clean water is poised to be the next big global crisis.
Our first venture has been to bring the gift of clean water, through the installation of this carbon filtration system, to our sister church in Tekax, with whom we have built a loving and trusting relationship over the last 20 years. Throughout these years, generations of our youth and families have traveled to Tekax and their lives have been positively transformed by their experience there. Our vision is that over time, our experience there will lead to other installations, perhaps in the Yucatan, perhaps elsewhere.
God has called us to be good stewards of creation. This includes preserving the earth’s clean water supply. God has called us to do justice. This includes ensuring that water and other necessities of life are available to all.
